Petition against india's language policy!

I was going thru orkut and came across this link in the "besantnagar beach "community. Its about India trying to make Hindi the representive language for India at the UN. Do you think this is absurd considering that less than 50% people in India speak Hindi? When it makes more sense to use English as a common official language, why this preference given to Hindi?
